Queen of the Deer: Rainy Frolicking in Nara

Nara’s deer park- in my mind I pictured a scene of charming deer (not unlike Bambi) mingling in the grass, nuzzling against my hand and staring into my eyes with love. The reality was far from this vision, as the dark and cloudy morning left us damp and the deer slightly miffed. Visitors be ware, Nara is not the place to make a kindred spirit, but in exercise in watching your back. The deer have lived in this location for their whole lives- meaning they are completely unfazed by humans and know you hold their next snack. After several nips at my coat and noses thrust into my pockets I wised up and stayed on the outskirts of the congregation.
